The Temporomandibular joint [1] is a hinge that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. It allows you to move your jaw up and down and from side to side so that you can talk, yawn and chew.

What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of TMD are:

  • Pain in the jaw, joint, neck, shoulders, in, or around the ear.
  • Problems while trying to open your mouth wide.
  • Jaws get stuck or locked in an open or closed mouth position.
  • A clicking sound when you open or close your mouth.
  • Trouble while chewing.
  • Swelling on the side of the face.

Causes Of Jaw Pain During Pregnancy

There is no particular cause of jaw pain in pregnancy. Dentists believe that jaw pain while pregnant arise due to the problems with the joint or the muscles of the jaw. The possible causes of jaw pain in pregnancy are:

  1. An ENT infection
  2. Emergence of wisdom teeth
  3. A Cardiovascular condition
  4. Feebleness
  5. An injury to the jaw or the muscles of the neck and head
  6. Lack of calcium
  7. Sleeping on one side
  8. Grinding of the teeth


There are many conditions similar to TMJ disorders like toothache, sinus problems or gum diseases. Therefore, your dentist will conduct a clinical examination to determine the cause of your jaw ache.

He will examine your temporomandibular joints for tenderness or pain. He will also listen for popping or grating sounds during your jaw movement. Your doctor may also get a panoramic X-ray done. This X-ray will allow your dentist to get an entire view of the jaw. Your doctor will also perform imaging tests like magnetic resonance imaging [2](MRI) or a computer tomography (CT)[3] to see the proper positioning of the jaw.


The treatment for TMJ disorder ranges from conservative treatments to surgery. The treatment should begin with non-surgical therapies first, surgery being the last resort. Here are some generic remedies to cure an aching jaw during pregnancy.

1. Cold Compress:

If the jaw pain is intense, rub an ice cube or place an ice pack to the side of the face and temple area for 10 minutes. It will surely ease the pain.

2. Exercises:

Simple stretching exercises can also help. Stretch the tongue and hold it in the same position for a while. It will relieve the pressure on the jaw, thereby easing the pain. Make sure you perform these exercises under your dentist’s supervision.

3. Painkiller:

In case of unbearable pain, take a painkiller or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [4] to relieve muscle pain. However, make sure you consult your doctor before taking it.

4. Foods:

Taking flaxseeds with oatmeal or cereal can provide relief to the pain. Chamomile tea can also help to relieve jaw pain during pregnancy. Soft foods like mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, fish, cooked beans and eggs are ideal choices during jaw ache.

5. Posture:

Avoid making extreme jaw movements. Avoid yelling or singing and try not to chew or yawn too much. Practice good posture to reduce facial and jaw pain.
